May’s Money Moment

Say that three times fast!

May was a strange month for us in that we had way more going on. We were hustlin’ in our social circles for most of the month. Along with socializing tends to come a lot of spending. We started the camping season in May and that means maintenance on our beloved motorhome, the Quirky Turkey, was needed. May meant Mother’s Day came and went. May also saw us buy new couches to replace the wonderful second hand ones we had. After 15 years, it was just time to get new couches.

With our money roaring out the door like a mudslide, we buckled down in some areas and overspent in others. 33% of our budgets were overspent (OUCH!). We continued our restaurant budget challenge (mainly, to stay within it).

Moment: We are so responsible for our decisions with our money. Taking ownership over the waste or overspend is so important. If you want to do this, you could:

  1. Take stock – take a few hours of dedicated time and really see where your money is going.
  2. Build a budget that aligns with your values – Don’t build a budget that doesn’t include your life. You deserve to do what you want while being a responsible adult to the systems we’re in.
  3. Track your spending and update the tracker once a week. Personally, we love Mint and have been using it for years. It’s a great conversation starter when we talk about our finances.
